And loving every minute of it.That’s exactly what happens everyday in the Commonweath of Virginia through an exciting program – VirginiaFIRST. Since VirginiaFIRST began in 1996, more than 9,500 Virginia students in grades 1-12 have participated in programs, events and competitions designed to celebrate engineering and technology and give students an opportunity to solve real-world challenges.VirginiaFIRST is part of the US Foundation for the Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST), an organization founded in 1989 in Manchester, New Hampshire by inventor Dean Kamen. The purpose: To inspire young people to be science and technology leaders through interesting challenges and exciting sports-like competitions.VirginiaFIRST relies on sponsors and hundreds of educators, mentors and volunteers to provide these opportunities and administer a variety of FIRST programs.
